The Impact of Sprout Sellers
Summer is the height of the local food season. Farmers market tables piled high with fresh produce and beautiful flowers make it easy to envision meals filled with foods grown right here. But what happens when the season turns?
Future Roots has launched two popular community events, Root Sellers in the fall and Sprout Sellers in the spring. Together, they're building a culture of year-round, seasonal eating.
Bringing People Together
Root Sellers and Sprout Sellers bring eaters and producers together in a celebratory atmosphere. Nearly 20 vendor booths show off the variety that is available in the Idaho spring and fall. Shoppers find cool season produce, storage crops, preserved foods, pastured meats, bread, skincare products, and more.
Low-cost Workshops
In addition to the pop-up farmers market, low-cost workshops invite attendees to gain new skills for utilizing and maximizing the harvest. Attendees have learned to ferment vegetables, can applesauce, craft nutrient-dense bone broth, arrange beautiful bouquets of spring flowers, and mix herbal infusions.
Economic Impact
Root and Sprout Sellers are free to attend for all community residents. The response has been remarkable. More than 400 people of all ages have turned out to each event to shop, eat, dance to live music, and reconnect with neighbors across generations. And the impact goes beyond celebration. Sprout Sellers generated over $23,000 in local economic activity.
That's the power of our work: local food thriving in every season.
